.NET Framework SDK

Now that you have installed the .NET Framework we can also install the .Net Framework Software Development Kit. As we now want to develop .Net applications we may require the extra tools loaded from the Software Development Kit. This can be freely downloaded from Microsoft (.NET Framework 2.0 SDK x86 2.0) and there is ample information available on the Microsoft Developer Network Website. Be aware that the download is 109 Mbytes so you will need a Broadband internet connection. If you own or intend to purchase a copy of Visual Studio 2003 you won’t have to do this as visual studio comes complete with all the necessary software on the prerequisites disk. The installation routine for Visual Studio will take you through installation of the .Net Framework SDK prior to installing Visual Studio.

Installation is a fairly straight forward process, follow the on screen instructions and check the MSDN website if you get stuck. After installation you will find that there are new items added to your start menu (from the programs menu) including “Overview”, “Samples and Quick Start Tutorials”, “Tools” and most important of all the .Net Framework SDK “Documentation”. Much of the above you won’t need to be too concerned with at this stage although I would advise you to have a good look through the material which has been added. The Documentation however is essential so you may as well create a shortcut to this on your desktop at this stage. The Documentation includes a vast amount of essential information including all the relevant relationships between the various namespaces and classes. While I appreciate that this may be meaningless to you at this stage, trust me, you will need this as you progress. When you open the .Net Framework SDK Documentation it should look something like this.

.Net Framework SDK

During the .Net Framework installation a number of configuration changes are made to IIS to support ASP.Net web pages. Provided you make sure that IIS is installed prior to the .Net Framework then everything should end up configured correctly, if not then you may wish to consider reinstalling the .Net Framework to ensure that everything is set up correctly.
