The Microsoft Data Engine is readily available for developers to use for developing SQL Server databases. MSDE is a cut down version of the full Microsoft SQL Server product but databases developed on MSDE are completely compatible with the full SQL Server product. MSDE lacks the interfaces provided with SQL Server such as Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer which make it easy to manage and is tuned to support a lower number of users but nevertheless is an ideal platform for developing SQL Server database. MSDE can be downloaded free from MSDN but once again it is a large download at approximately 70 Mbytes (Download MSDE). The installation procedure is simple and well documented on the MSDN website. MSDE can be installed on your workstation or on another computer on the local area network and connected to across the network. If you have chosen to run a development server then you may choose to install your MSDE database on that server as well.
