Creating a web application using IIS

A. General

During this exercise we will use IIS 5 loaded on Windows XP Pro but you will find that the process we follow will be largely the same irrespective of which version of IIS you are running and whatever operating system you have installed.

In order to manage IIS you will need to open the Management Console by completing the following:

1. Open “Control Panel” from the start menu.

2. Double Click “Administrative Tools” and then Double Click the “Internet Information Services” icon to open the Microsoft Management Console with the IIS Snap-In loaded.

(If you haven’t done so already I would suggest that you create a short cut to this icon on the desktop as this will save you considerable time in the long run.)

The Microsoft Management Console is a general purpose tool used to manage a number of Microsoft’s software systems and services and provides basic functionality across a range of processes in a consistent manner. It works by loading different controls (the Snap In) according to what is being managed. You can open the Microsoft Management Console on its own (without a Snap In) by typing “mmc” into the Run option from your start menu. In this instance the Snap In loaded is the one relevant for managing the IIS and should look similar to Figure 1 below.
