Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access is a fairly straight forward Database shipped with the Microsoft Office suite of software. It is relatively common, found on a wide range of desktops and reasonably easy to use. Because of its wide scale availability and the fact that many hosting companies support it with no additional charge it is often the database of choice for simple web application projects.

When using Microsoft Access you should be aware that it does have limitations and will only support about 5 to 10 concurrent connections and will only support databases of a limited size. A Microsoft Access database will not easily scale up to a full blown SQL server database without considerable development work and changes to the design of your web application. It is therefore important to assess whether Access will be sufficient for your needs at the outset of the development process.
